How do I ...

Most conservation work is done by property owners. Few of us have the training and experience to do the wide range of tasks required. The Standards and Guidelines set out what we should do, but not how we should do it.

Practical and useful advice for owners and professionals has been developed by experts around the world. We have provided links to a number of them that should be helpful and relevant to historic places in Nova Scotia. These documents are organized into the same categories as the Guidelines.

Remember to use the Standards and Guidelines first to determine what work is required - just because it is possible, does not mean it is necessary.

Be mindful that many of these documents have been developed for other jurisdictions, legal obligations for your own jurisdiction must be followed.

Do work you are comfortable with, or share the Standards and Guidelines with the professional trades and craft workers who will be doing the work for you. Professional advice and skilled ability will be required in some circumstances.
