Searching

The Nova Scotia Register of Historic Places is searchable in several ways. Each successful search will result in a list of properties. Click on the Property Name to view detailed information about the place.

The Quick Search option allows users to search by the Name of Historic Place, Keyword, County and Tourism Trail.

Name of Historic Place will search only the formal name of the place and any associated other names that the place may also be known by. This is not an exhaustive list, as places can be known by many names.

Keyword searches all fields in the database.

County will return a list of all registered and protected places in one county.

Tourism Trail is based on the tourism trails as found in Nova Scotia's Doers and Dreamers guides and at novasotia.com.

The Advanced Search option allows users to search by the Name of Historic Place, Date of Construction, Use, and Geographic Location. Again, users may also search using one or more of these fields to produce a refined search.

Date of Construction can be a single year or a date span.

Users can search by Current or Historical Use by selecting from a list of terms in a drop down menu. Pick the term that most closely represents your searching interest.

Geographic Location allows users to search broadly, or to focus on a specific community. Depending on which County is selected from the drop down menu, the Municipality menu will be refreshed to correspond. To further narrow a search, once a Municipality is chosen, the Community menu will refresh to correspond.

Content

Users can expect to find location information, photographs, contextual and historical information. The most crucial section of the property record is the Statement of Significance, consisting of the Description of Place, Heritage Value, and Character-Defining Elements. The role of the Statement of Significance, or SOS, is to inform readers of what the historic place is, where it is and most importantly why it is valued.

Each record is accompanied by at least three images. The copyright of these images is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia. Please contact the NSHPI office before undertaking any publication or distribution of them.
