Heritage Conservation District Established in Sydney

On February 19, 2008, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality passed a by-law establishing the second-largest heritage conservation district in Nova Scotia. The largest district is located in the Old Town section of Lunenburg.

The process took more than two years and is the culmination of hard work by planners, committees and residents a like.  The district encompasses the oldest neighbourhood in Sydney, with the earliest building dating to 1785.

Among the buildings included in the district are: Cossit HouseSt. Patrick's Church, Jost House, Kennedy House, and St. George's Church.

More information is available on the Cape Breton Regional Municipality web-site.

Putting Annapolis Royal on the Map

On Heritage Day, February 18, 2008 the Nova Scotia Historic Places Initiative (NSHPI) office was pleased to present the Town of Annapolis Royal with a copy of the Points in Time Map at a ceremony held at Town Hall in Annapolis Royal.

Property owners whose historic place is featured on the map were presented with their own smaller framed version of the map. To celebrate heritage conservation in the Town of Annapolis Royal, the NSHPI, using a 1878 map of the town, plotted existing registered buildings on the map. An interactive, on-line version of the map is also available.

Putting Digby on the Map

On November 3, 2007 the Nova Scotia Historic Places Initiative (NSHPI) office was pleased to present the Municipality of the County of Digby with a framed copy of the Points in Time Map at a ceremony held in the Municipal office in Digby. Property owners whose historic place is featured on the map were presented with their own smaller framed version of the map.

To celebrate heritage conservation in the Municipality of the County of Digby, the NSHPI, using a 1855 map of the county, plotted existing registered buildings on the map. An interactive, on-line version of the map is also available.
